Groups work to preserve land in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region stretches over 9,000 square miles and recreation opportunities draw both locals and tourists to the area. The 11 Finger Lakes and surrounding rural landscape provide opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, but environmental threats like development make the area vulnerable to habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation. ​

Fostering learning through sustainable agriculture education

The Learning Farm, a roughly 16-acre property nestled next to Robert H. Treman State Park in Ithaca, educates children and families about the importance of sustainability and agriculture.
​
​The farm offers after-school programs, summer camps, and farm visits in addition to being an ecotourism spot in Ithaca. Programs for children focus on STEAM education which stands for science, technology, engineering, art, agriculture and math at the farm. Co-owner and head farmer Pete Núñez said that the main goals of the farm are to share their knowledge about regenerative farming and help people connect back to the land.

Ithaca activists march for climate change policies

Climate change is driven largely by the use of fossil fuels and as the world warms and countries continue to fall short of climate goals, activists are increasing protest efforts to make themselves heard.
​
On September 17, 2023, over 75,000 people participated in the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City, calling for President Biden to ​​declare a climate emergency, stop oil and gas projects, and phase out drilling projects. Members of the Ithaca community attended the march which took place ahead of Climate Week and the 2023 United Nations Climate Ambition Summit, to demand action.

Mini-Grant program helps grassroots initiatives

Last spring, the Sustainable Finger Lakes Neighborhood Mini-Grant Program awarded four grants to innovative projects including two environmental groups working to improve native plant gardens.

Being a good neighbor through art

Cortland based artist Molly Reagan celebrates her hometown through art. Reagan is a muralist, illustrator and the creator of Good Neighbor Art. She recently won the 2022 award for Best Mural in the Ithaca Times "Best of Ithaca" competition for her piece Airways Maze located in Ithaca's Sciencecenter.

Cass Park celebrates 50 years

Community members of all ages attended the 50th birthday party for Cass Park on November 5, 2022, and skated on the newly enclosed rink with no fear of condensation forming or melting ice --- which are just two problems that used to impact the rink every year.
