Leadership
This semester I jumped into sports, co-curriculars, and took SLI courses to learn about the diverse world we live in and how to become a better leader!
Ithaca College Women's Crew
I rowed on the varsity women's sweep team and competed in two regattas. I loved going to practice every day and feeling myself become stronger physically and mentally throughout the fall. The team practiced every day and I saw how the captains and upperclassmen led the team. They fostered a close-knit group with upperclassmen who were encouraging and helpful to all athletes. The captains worked to have us feel a strong sense of belonging and school spirit and I've been learning to throw in a "yeah bombs!" and "let's go bombers!" into my everyday language.
Campus Band
I have loved being back in a room and playing music in an ensemble this year. The group meets once a week and working with others to make one cohesive sound and concert has been a great experience. I have been learning to collaborate with the clarinet section and make one sound and then weave that into the overall band sound. I've also been working on making sure I play out my important melody lines while also hanging back and playing quieter for other voices to be heard when I don't have melody parts.
WICB Newscasts and Ithaca Now Podcast
I have been reporting for a news podcast here on campus and I have learned so much! I had never reported in high school and learning how to find an idea, pitch it to my editors, and then go out and interview and produce the segment has been a great way for me to build my confidence and learn how to be a journalist.
The Ithacan News Staff Reporter
Similar to the podcast, I have been writing stories this semester and I have learned how to work with an editor in my time writing. I have to be on top of my work and make deadlines. I also have to be responsive when I have edits and communicate with my editors about how stories and going and ask for help and assistance when I need it.
Friends of the Library Book Sale
As part of a Service Saturday, I worked a the Friends of the Library Book sale which raised money for the public library. I worked as a gatekeeper to make sure the proper number of people were in the building. I also worked as a floater to help customers find books and sections they were looking for. When I was volunteering I saw so many people excited about books and reading and I decided to come back the next day, interview volunteers and customers, and I made it a story for the WICB podcast.
SLI Leading Self: Leading by Example and through Dialogue
This was my first SLI course I went to and taking a leading self course helped me understand what it means to be self-aware and accountable while taking ownership of your actions. Dr. Susan Salahshor, Director of the Physician Assistant Program, presented the course and she had us write three leadership goals for ourselves for the semester and mine were improving my ability to listen critically to others, communicate my feelings to others, and work on slowing down and staying calm and collected in stressful situations. I have been successful in working on these goals this semester. I have been reporting for The Ithacan and a WICB news podcast and having to interview faculty and students has been stressful, but I have been working on all of my goals through having active listening skills as I talk to interviewees and staying collected as I talk to people in positions of power. I have also been working on communicating what I have learned in the articles and pieces I write.
SLI- Leading in a Diverse World: Global Water Issues— Sustainability
In this presentation by Greg Lischke, the director of Energy Management & Sustainability at Ithaca College I learned about the water uses at the college as well as the global struggles for access to clean water. I learned just how much water is required to keep this college running and the numbers were huge. 120 million gallons are used every year and 35 million of those are just for students showering alone. Breaking it down by the numbers helped me realize what I can do as an individual to limit my water usage and just be more aware of how I use the resources around me. In the world, our water consumption is steadily increasing and looking for innovative ways to use our water more efficiently and find alternatives was really informative to hear about and talk about in this presentation.
Leading in a Diverse World: @BlackJewishMagic Instagram Influencer: Ashager Araro
Hearing Ashager Araro speak about her childhood and growing up broadened my knowledge about Israel and the tensions in the country. Hearing about her being so confident in her identity as a black Jewish Israeli woman was really cool. I also enjoyed hearing Araro talk about her love for her community. She stressed the importance of sharing stories of your community as a method of preserving history and educating future generations which I thought was really interesting and expanded my knowledge.
